I LOVE this post, Gladys! I have appreciated all your other posts that I've read, but this was really hit home. Grammar DOES matter. I'm one of those linguistic types: my ears are more attuned to hearing nuances, patterns, accents, pronunciations, and the like than others, and I'm a stickler for grammar. Language is a beautiful part of God's creation, and it says a lot about a person when they care to follow rules and use proper grammar. That's a huge reason why we should read aloud to our children. They will hear correct grammar and in turn, use it. I am a firm advocate of reading quality, living books to babies, and not using baby talk when speaking to babies. Thank you for this post!

One more thing I wanted to add: I have found that I enjoy hearing my children say "cute" things, like, "I didn't want that cutten," instead of "I didn't want you to cut that." Again, as a linguist, I am fascinated by their innate desire to follow the old rules that are dormant from our language's German roots! But there comes a time to explain the correct usage and put off childish things. :)

The regional mistake I heard most often in Michigan was "could have went" instead of "could have gone".
