First, Hi Gladys! Glad to have found your blog!
I have to agree that these publisher schemes usually are disasters in the making. However, your post also made me think of how our family has enjoyed the Peter and the Starcatcher series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. That was not a publisher-sponsored scheme, but the authors use the classic Peter Pan story as a jumping-off point for their "prequel" adventures. In this case, I think the quality of the "inspired by" piece was very good and not initiated just to cash in on the success of the original.
