Sarah Plain and Tall is a wonderful book to read aloud to children five and older. With short chapters and vivid imagery, Patricia MacLachlan introduces her readers to Jacob, a widower, and his children, Anna and Caleb, who deeply long for a mother-figure. The author captures powerfully the anticipation, longing and delight of the relationship that Caleb and Anna develop with Sarah, who travels from Maine to the open prairie to join them.
Children and their parents won't want to put the book down until they find out whether Sarah will leave her beloved Maine to join them on the prairie.
