If you have only met Heidi through the character portrayed in film by Shirley Temple, then Johanna Spyri's book will be a treat. Just as the movie is clearly on a movie set, and not in the Alps, so the book is far deeper, and more rich and nuanced than the film. In the book, Spyri brilliantly develops the characters of Heidi and her grandfather, and demonstrates the beauty of simplicity, love and honesty. This author is truly a master of helping readers (and young listeners) experience and cherish the deep feelings of the heart.
